Description
Summary:In a nutshell, the argument of this short but dense book is that ancient Judaism knows nothing of the Greek concept of chronos, time: ‘The concept of time as an entity in itself was unknown in ancient Jewish culture, and … reality was experienced only in terms of processes’. This simple and extreme thesis is pursed single-mindedly, with clarity and considerable skill and erudition, through a labyrinth of secondary issues, analogies, and possible objections. The book is well documented, and takes careful account of earlier writing on the subject. (It appeared too soon to consider the second volume of Sylvie-Anne Goldberg's important work La Clepsydre, but does engage with vol. 1.), The argument is pursued through six chapters.
