Summary:The twelve essays in honour of G. F. Hawthorne are grouped under three headings: Greek and Exegesis, Gospels and Acts, and Epistles, with an Appreciation (by R. P. Martin), an Introduction which amounts to a second Appreciation (by the editors), and a list of Hawthorne's publications., In the first section D. E. Aune discusses the meaning of 𝛉εραπεύω in the context of a rather rigid linguistic philosophy. His negative conclusion, that it is not used figuratively of spiritual healing, is perhaps more firmly founded than the positive one that immediate healing inheres in the word's meaning. W. W. Klein discusses the relation between exegetical rigour and hermeneutical humility, raising more questions than answers; and D. L.
