Summary: | In an article first published in 1961 Ulrich Wilckens wanted ‘to draw a straight line from the claim of Jesus to the centre of the primitive Christian belief in the resurrected one’ (Revelation as History, ed. W. Pannenberg; Eng. trans. London: Sheed and Ward, 1969, p. 79). The first two (of three) parts of volume 1 of his projected three-volume New Testament theology deliver this on a grand scale. The earlier essay was part of an initial salvo against the then dominant Bultmannian theology. Avoiding the weaknesses of Cullmann's ‘salvation-history’ scheme, it aimed to give real history its proper place in theology. A major New Testament theology on these lines is particularly welcome at a time when the theological dimensions of historical Jesus research are again being discussed. |
