Description
Summary:‘The Writingsof John’ for the purpose of this book are the Gospel and 1 John. Its author, a graduate of George Fox University (USA), completed the doctorate on which it is based at St Andrews University with Ronald Piper as supervisor. The book has one basic thesis, which is hammered home repeatedly. In John God acts as ‘patron’; believers, whether Jewish or Christian, are ‘clients’; Jesus is the supreme ‘broker’ with the Paraclete as a subordinate ‘broker’; the disciples have a limited role as even more subordinate ‘brokers’. These figures stand in contrast to the Jewish priests, Pharisees, and other religious leaders who are rival and useless ‘brokers’, in competition with Jesus.
