| Summary: | This is a book that reflects extensive Greek learning, together with a good general knowledge of biblical, Jewish, and Christian studies, to which its Greek learning is applied. It has much to teach on Greek subjects. It shows the common idea that the text of Homer was first written down from oral sources in the time of Pisistratus to be unsupported, in this form, by the ancient evidence. It shows that the Alexandrian grammarians did not (as is often asserted) call their select lists of classics ‘canons’. Moving into Latin studies, it demonstrates the considerable contribution of Augustine to the idea of authorship., In Jewish and biblical studies, the author is rather less sure-footed.
