| Zusammenfassung: | In the Philippines, the family acts as a caregiver, patient advocate, and primary decision-maker on matters related to the care of those dying or seriously ill. Patients take on a passive role and readily accept a loss of autonomy as they entrust themselves entirely to their family's care. Religious beliefs and cultural values present obstacles to discussions about advanced directives. Filial piety, a religious duty to preserve the gift of life, and a belief in God as the arbiter of life and death are factors that influence Filipino families to leave in God's hands the time and manner of a person's death. Aggressive medical interventions are often favored over withholding or removing extraordinary means to sustain life for terminal patients. Filipino families are expected to do everything to extend the terminally ill patient's life until God chooses to intervene and end the patient's suffering. Covid-19 protocols present severe challenges to the practice of family-centered health care by limiting the amount of contact and care the family can provide for members infected with the virus. |
