Er ist auch derjenige Papst, der für den Papst und die Kurie alljährliche Besinnungstage im Vatikan eingeführt hat. Wenn er als Papst solch ein glühender Förderer spiritueller Exerzitien war, dann weil er zuvor als Priester über einen Zeitraum von dreißig Jahren ein regelmäßiger Praktizierender war : In Rho als Oblate von Saint-Ambroise und Saint-Charles und später in einem von den Jesuiten geleiteten Haus für Besinnungstage, dem Exerzitienhaus von Tisis, in der Nähe von Feldkirch in Österreich. Die Archive zeugen von der Regelmäßigkeit dieser Aufenthalte. Als Papst arbeitete Achille Ratti daran, die einem religiösen Orden eigene spirituelle Praxis zu verbreiten und rekrutierte aus diesen übrigens zahlreiche enge Mitarbeiter. Pius XI is the first pope, and, to date, the only one to have devoted a complete encyclical, Mens nostra (1929), to the Spiritual Exercises. He is also the pope who introduced an annual retreat, for the Pope and the Curia, at the Vatican ; a practice that all of his successors have continued. If, he was such an ardent promoter of the Spiritual Exercises as pope, this is due to his having earlier been, as a priest, a regular practitioner for more than thirty years : in Rho, as an oblate of Saint Ambroise and Saint Charles, and then in a large spiritual retreat house directed by the Jesuits, Exerzitienhaus in Tisis, close to Feldkirch in Austria. Archives show the regularity of these stays. Once become pope, Achille Ratti worked hard to spread the spiritual practice belonging to a religious order from where, moreover, he recruited many of his close collaborators. |
