Summary: | The Life of John Buncle, Esq. is published as a volume in a series entitled The Literature of Early Modern Ireland which focuses upon Irish prose fiction of the long 18th century, between 1680 and 1820. More than simply of antiquarian interest, this critical edition of Thomas Amory’s ‘novel’ serves to remind us of the importance of the development of fiction writing in the discussion of religion and religious ideas, as well as the growth of national consciousness and culture. Although it is an uneven and even at times turgid work, there are moments of Irish wit and dry humour that clearly anticipate the comedy and style of the far better known Tristram Shandy (1759–67), which it predates in publication by just three years. |
