It argues that Hopkins' Wreck deliberately invokes the famous accounts of mystical ascent found in the Confessions, and that the central experience of Hopkins' ode is a vision of the ‘Self-same’ God or ‘Light Unchangeable’ as encountered by Augustine in these autobiographical accounts of mystical contemplation. |
