| Summary: | This article examines creation as a central theme in the fiction of Marilynne Robinson. First it will look at the doctrine of creatio ex nihilo as a major theme of Gilead. This will be read against the Genesis narrative of creation and the doctrine of the fall as expressed in Robinson's next novel, Housekeeping. The theme becomes less apparent in her third novel, Home, which further illuminates the theme in the previous ones. An understanding of this doctrinal and narrative background provides insight into both novels and their main characters and reveals Robinson as an important theological voice qua novelist. |
