Description
Summary:Barryspurr's new book combines meticulous literary analyses with theological insight into the significance of a figure whose slim references in the New Testament have given rise to a massive literature and tradition of devotion. After a lengthy Introduction, Spurr's first full chapter begins in the Middle Ages and the contrast between the constancy and purity of the Virgin and the disorders of earthly passions. Each chapter then attends to an age of English literature—the Renaissance, the Romantic, the Modernist and the contemporary—tracing the changing image and shifting theological significance of the Mother of Jesus in English Church, culture and society.
