Summary: | George Ballard, in his Memoirs of Several Ladies of Great Britain (1752), wished Mary Astell's Christian Religion was in ‘every hand’. However, he reserved his most detailed treatment for her letters, noting that they ‘have been much applauded for their good sense, sublime thoughts and fine language … if there was nothing more remaining of this worthy gentlewoman's performances, this alone would perpetuate her memory to latest posterity’ (pp. 3–5). Mary Astell and John Norris: Letters Concerning the Love of God (hereinafter, ‘Letters’) is presented unabashedly as a corrective to all preceding scholarship on Mary Astell that aligns her to what might seem an intellectually or politically naïve brand of mystical Christianity. |
