Summary: | The contention of this article is that it is possible to approach Catholicism in the work of James Joyce in terms of genre I suggest that an analogy can be made between the world views of Catholicism and classic realism. By considering the Bakhtinian notion of genre as ideologically grounded and using Catholicism as a model, we can read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as a site of collision between the world views of classic realism and modernism and Ulysses as a deconstruction of the genre of classic realism. |
