Summary: | Edmund Gosse's autobiography Father and Son (1907) and The Life of Philip Henry Gosse, F.R.S (1890) serve as comparative texts for an examination of the literary inheritance that Edmund received from his father Philip. Uncertainity over whether Philip was a Puritan ogre or rival artist is carried over into a blurring of identity between father, son, biography and auto-biography. The essay argues that ambivalence over competing literary and biblical ancestries contributed to Edmund's condemnation of the typological education which made Father and Son possible. |
