Summary: | In Mario Vargas Llosa's The Storyteller, each of the novel's three storytellers-Saù, the narrator and Vargas Llosa-undergoes a conversion from fascinated hearer of stories to (un)masked teller of tales. In taking on the mask of storyteller, the individual finds himself facing a community of listeners who know how to read behind that mask. The transformative dialogue between memory and invention out of which stories emerge is replicated by the storyteller and stories emerge. The novel's reader is called to enter into this transformative dialogue by (un)masking herself through telling her own stories. |
