Summary: | H. Tristram Engelhardt has provocatively reassessed the recent history of Christian bioethics. Although his challenge to the standard account is praiseworthy, I argue that those committed to an authentic Christian bioethics have reason to question two of Engelhardt’s claims: (1) the Church fathers authoritatively and correctly proscribe the secular idiom and the use of philosophy to justify religious and moral commitments and (2) the Roman Catholic Church incorrectly prioritizes reason over faith or at least wrongly reduces faith to that which is accessible by reason. I argue that Engelhardt’s case for these claims rests on exiguous evidence, and I also call his evidence into question. In both my agreement with Engelhardt’s fraternal correction and my response to Engelhardt’s allegations, my hope is to encourage a more honest, charitable, and authentic Christian bioethics that allows for differences in emphasis but maintains unity in the Holy Spirit. |
