He began to study the Gnostic movements when he tried to understand the rise of European totalitarian movements in the 20th century. Voegelin studies the sectarian Gnostics movements coming from the Christian Antiquity, which develop in Middle Ages, remain in Modern Age and culminate with the Nazism and Stalinism. In this article, we intend to show how Voegelin studied systematically some characteristics of the Gnostics movements, as well how he spreads the idea that the totalitarianism is a result of a immanentization originally from Gnosticism. Besides we will investigate some criticism about the Voegelin’s theory. | ||
