Summary: | This article provides a transcription of a hitherto unpublished verse translation into Dutch by the Vlissingen poet Jan Guépin (1715-1766) of the first chapter of Book IV (originally III) of the Imitatio Christi, on the reverent reception of Holy Communion. The text is put in the context of the reception of the fourth book by Protestant readers in the Netherlands from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, and compared with its source, the verse translation into French by Pierre Corneille (1606-1684). Guépin consistently removed all traces of specifically Catholic theology to make the text suit his own Reformed sensibilities. |
