Descrição
Resumo:Placide Tempels was a pioneer in presenting Bantu philosophy in the mid-20th century as a serious ontological and metaphysical system. His book stands in the context of Europe’s discovery of African art and of its aesthetics. In this article the conditions for this reception and the resonance of key motifs of Bantu philosophy with developments in European culture are discussed. Fields of cultural and epistemic difference which persist are identified for further consideration and suggestions for further reception are indicated.
