| Summary: | This article proposes a summary of contemporary eschatology. The major problem is the relationship between eschaton and history and this article tries to clarify this aspect.First the notion of eschaton is examined, as elucidated by Barth and Bultmann and by the theologians of hope: Moltmann, Pannenberg and Sauter. The conclusion is that the eschaton is the inner secret of time, that which time must manifest.Secondly this conclusion is investigated in the theologians of history: Dodd and Cullmann, Thils and Daniélou, Balthasar and Darlap, the theology of liberation, and the political theology of Metz. The rationale is to make out the criteria for a correct hermeneutics from the eschaton. The article closes with some words on millenarism and Greshake’s thesis on the end of the world as theologoumenon. |
