Summary: | This paper concentrates on analogies and differences in the use of the image of the vestment, which can be found in a number of representations of the resurrection of the first centuries and tries to identify the specific nature of the Origenian position. On the one hand the Alexandrine author – against a too materialistic interpretation of the resurrection – avoids talking about the resurrection of the flesh and depicts the body of the resurrected as an ethereal and luminous vestment, in perfect tuning with the Gnostics; on the other – maybe exactly in opposition to the Gnostic contempt for the earthly body, he avoids describing death as a final somatic spoliation and asserts – through these contradictory positions – his difficulty in reconciling the Christian hope for resurrection with a negative vision of the body and matter of Platonic inspiration. |
