Summary: | The varied uses of the olive (tree) and oil in the Hebrew world and in the ancient Near East have created a symbolic tradition that has emphasized their qualities and their value and has sublimated the precious resources contained therein, such as the «beautiful» shape, the tree’s tenacity and fertility. The many symbols connected to oil in its uses, which span from the kitchen to the altar, from temple lights to perfume have condensated the meaning of preciousness and sheen, joy, peace, and allegiance, therapeutic and purifying powers, celebration, force, and victory. The consideration of uses and symbols allows to better explicate the meaning of certain biblical expressions and, at the same time, reveals a typically Mediterranean sensibility. |
