Summary: | The division of church society in boni coniugati, continents, and praedicatores is the central theme of Gregorian thought. The contemplative life lead by a monk is compared to the active life led by married people. An efficient synthesis of the two choices is that of the clerics, who combine prayer with love for the neighbor. The present study, conducted on the basis of the Gregorian works considered to be authentic and those of dubious paternity, analyzes the organization of the ordo clericorum in its institutional, administrative, and economic structures, elucidating the interactions and the relations among the tres ordines fidelium. |
