| Summary: | It cannot be denied that pioneer North American Presbyterian missionaries arrived in Brazil with some cultural baggage and that it spilled out into their ministry. But to what extent did their concepts of church and society leave a mark on Brazilian Presbyterianism as it is today? Brazilian church historians differ on the answer to that question. In this essay the author looks at the work of the pioneers for evidences of negative influence in the Brazilian church of the nineteenth century North American concepts of Manifest Destiny and the “Spiritual Church.” He finds evidence that the pioneers are not as blameworthy in these areas as some have charged. |
