Description
Summary:Ancestor cult has not only survived the challenges of rationism, secularism and urbanization, it has accommodated to the socio-political facts of life and, in new forms, is enjoying something of a resurgence among Chinese people — not only the urbanized masses but also the educated. These are the conclusions of Professor Hwang after two extensive world-wide trips on which he had opportunity to observe current veneration practices at close range. Beyond sharing his observations, the author calls for serious research and theological reflection aimed at encountering the ancestor cult practitioner with sensitivity to his world view, on the one hand, and biblical, authoritative norms, on the other. While some of his proposals relate uniquely to his own Roman Catholic tradition, most of the issues raised warrant a fresh look by all missiologists.
