Description
Summary:Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann note that '... there will always be a social- structural base for competition between rival definitions of reality... ' This essay seeks to analyze that base at Colossae as a means to understanding the debate between the New Testament writer and his rivals, as seen in Colossians 2, rather than to interpret the 'rival definitions' relative to external conceptual parallels and the religious or philosophical background of the rivals. The Wisdom Christology of the 'hymn' in Col. 1.15-20, held largely in common by both writer and rivals is nonetheless subject to different interpretation and emphasis depending upon their social profiles. Using the lens of the grid-group paradigm of Mary Douglas, one may highlight the differences between the social identities of the writer and his rivals and hypothesize probable differences in their cosmologies.
