Description
Summary:This paper investigates the role of celibacy in the life and thinking of Ignaz von Döllinger (1799-1890), the church historian form Munich. Throughout his life he endorsed celibacy as a historically grown ecclesiastic discipline and appreciated it as a lifestyle. In the Old Catholic debate om priestly celibacy, which erupted in Germany in 1874 and ended with the Old Catholic synod in 1878, where the requirement of celibacy for Old Catholic priests was abandoned, Döllinger was against its abolition. By way of his historical knowledge he was afraid that this step could lead to the dissolution of the Old Catholic communities and the whole Old Catholic movement. For this reason he held that if a priest married, he should no longer hold spiritual functions.
