| Summary: | Both the Pastoral Epistles and the Acts of Paul feature Paul as the normative authority for their own idealized concept of Christian existence. However, even where they develop the same motifs or those traditions that are centered upon the person of Paul, they prove to be two fundamentally different trajectories of Pauline tradition in the second century c.e. Com-pared to Paul’s rather ambiguous attitude towards marriage in 1 Cor 7, the Pastoral Epistles advocate marriage in order to project the image of Christians as model citizens, whereas the Acts of Paul engage in asceticism as an alternative way of life thereby demonstrating the Christian disdain of the core values of pagan society. |
