Description
Summary:This paper investigates the relationship between sacral language and holy words in the account of the sacrifice of Jephtha’s daughter. This highly complex text has brought forth many interpretations, especially regarding the judge’s character. We attempt to determine the message (taking the power of the spoken word – a vow – as the starting point) and to derive from there the story’s inevitability. The spoken «holy» word followed by the judges expected victory made a different ending almost impossible. But the judge’s exoneration is only an apparent one. The weakening brought about through his spoken word, the sovereignty of the daughter’s actions, as well as the linguistic gaps which are only meant to hint at the conflict’s resolution, serve the realization, that vows are to be mistrusted as holy words, because – as in this case – they acquire a wholly tragic meaning.
