Summary: | Along the lines of material collected by Walter Benjamin in his so-called Passagenwerk, this paper attempts to illuminate the intense relationship between 19th-century Paris and the many types of women inhabiting it. After a first analysis of the symbolic figures of the prostitute and the lesbian, the experience of Claire Démar, a Saint-Simonianist activist, is reconstructed: the three investigations share the thesis according to which modernity is the backdrop for the «sorrowful game» of the female body. |
