Summary: | This essay focuses on the role of the biblical tradition in outlining the modern concept of democracy. We will examine a text that tradition has never considered «democratic», Exodus 20,2-17, known as the Decalogue. The confrontation with the Greek legacy and the modern democratic theories will help us furnish a general framework of the democratic tradition. It will furthermore show us how infl uential the biblical tradition has been in the formation of the political identity of the West and how far awareness of this makes it fertile. The outcome of this study path can only be problematic, but it can supply those interested in research on modernity with new instruments and new points of departure for reflection. |
