| Summary: | The fi rst part of this paper presents the historical-architectonical story of the monastery of S. Giovanni il Nuovo in Stilo, Calabria, dating back to the 17th century and touched up more than once by the three religious orders that inhabited it until it acquired today’s neoclassical aspect. First came Francis of Paola’s Order of the Minims from 1625 until 1662, then the Basilian monks from1662 to 1789, and fi nally the Fathers of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer from1790 until 1828. The second part of the paper, in contrast, reconstructs the patrimony of books and archival material held at S. Giovanni il Nuovo in 1662 via an examination of subscriptions, ownership deeds, and inventories, just before the arrival of the Basilian monks. Let us hope that this precious treasure may reemerge from the oblivion of the past. |
