Summary: | After Vatican II, the Church’s social doctrine has been considered a specifi c form of «practical theology», closely linked to moral theology. This position, clearly discernable in the social teachings of John Paul II, nonetheless appears to be partially challenged by the emergence of the «anthropological question», which refers to not so much to the ‘acting’ as to the ‘existence’ of human beings. The teachings of Benedict XVI therefore seem to impose a renewed refl ection on the «epistemological statute» of the social doctrine. This paper calls for a more acute consideration of this complex problem. |
