Summary: | J.B. Metz traces the retrospective biography of his theological thinking, which begins with the inauguration of political theology in his volume Sulla Teologia del Mondo (1968): political theology stands for «theology facing the world», the elimination of thinking about faith from the private realm of existence, which in its own «historicity» cannot absorb the unpredictable course of historical events which characterize the world in the concreteness of its political and social structures. Under these circumstances, the problem of theodicy cannot be addressed by way of a privileged confessional immunization in the face of agony, or by pointing to the final metaphysical overcoming of all pain, but it must be seen in the light of a «history of passion of humanity» where suffering and pain become the fundamental narrative moment. Recovering this collective subjectivity, the recognition of the primary equality of all persons which also stands at the basis of Jesus’ actions, allows accepting the challenges of pluralism without succumbing to the decomposition of all values: the global program of a Christianity that can interact in a pluralistic context is that of the «passion of God» as «compassion for the other», «mysticism of open eyes». |
