Summary: | What is the meaning of Christmas according to Saint Paul? While the apostle is not interested in narrating the birth of Jesus, Gal 4:4 is nevertheless a central point in the theology of the Incarnation. In this important passage, Paul refers to the double mission of both the Son and the Spirit from the unique (one and only) Sender. At the same time, woman and law are both connected in a symbolic embrace: «born of a woman, born under the Law». It is not surprising that Paul does not mention the personal name of the woman who gave birth to the Son of God. The text’s perspective goes further. The focus is not Mary but the Incarnation itself. Why did the Son of God became man? And what does this paradox of divine kenosis mean? First of all it means freedom from the law. In a wider perspective this kenosis involves not only the Jews but the whole world: the Son of God became man so that we might receive the adoption as sons and daughters. |
