Description
Summary:The article examines the relation between crusade and pilgrimage using the example of the First Crusade. Was the self-image of a crusader that he was a pilgrim or was this aspect of minor importance? Both positions will be mainly controlled on the basis of the central source Gesta Francorum. The contribution of Urban II. to the idea of a crusade will be discussed. Finally, the First Crusade will be investigated as part of the development of the pilgrimage movement. The article concludes that the fusion of killing in a war and piety were not the result of a theoretical further stage of the idea of pilgrimage, but the interference of partly contradictorily concepts, which were formed in keeping with a new image. Both, the idea of crusade and the idea of pilgrimage, keep on existing independently of each other. To examine the spirituality of crusaders a perspective of development would be desirable.
