| Summary: | This article embraces the emphasis of the Italian Episcopal Conference to work for a new humanism. To this end, it draws on the tradition of Christian culture that shaped Western identity and pauses to reflect on the high prof le that it attributed – especially in the high Middle Ages – to speech and writing. There, the qualified realization of an anthropological vision becomes apparent that can oppose the word – as a realization of the high responsibility, which qualifies humanity and weaves history, basing it on the reliable Word of God – to the greed of time and the transience of the flatus vocis. Contrary to the contemporary reduction, the Christian tradition can offer a strong sense of the word, which is grounded in the Word of God himself and acknowledges in writing an act consistent with His qualifying inscription into the textum of the history of humanity. A further reflection tries to suggest the implications of this vision for an understanding of the body worthy of humanity and its eternal destiny. |
