Summary: | This article shows the role played by the clergy in Cuenca during the War of the Spanish Succession, paying special attention to the Council of Cannons. Opposite the Bourbon loyalty declared by the ecclesiastic institutions, some of those who were members of them preferred to take the Austrian option due to interests that concerned themselves and their family and client nets in order to guarantee their social status. Felipe the Fifth’s victory meant privileges to those who had shown firm support to his candidature whereas those who had preferred the Austrian option suffered hard reprisals because of disloyalty. |
