Description
Summary:The need for this article stems from the existing controversy created by re-peated affirmations of certain insiders of the monastic orthodox communities regarding the non-existence of the so called «double monasteries», i.e. the monasteries where men and women cohabit, which were prohibited illo tempore by the canonical and byzantine legislations. The article assumes to demonstrate that such affirmations are overturned by the fact that in spite of the prohibition lasting over centuries, there are still existing monasteries and places where monks and nuns live together, or in close proximity to one another. The proximity of gender in the monastic topos is found in a variety of cohabitation typologies, which are difficult to define and to label in rigid, technical terms. Our research is focused on the particular case of Romanian Orthodox Monastery, The Dormition of the Theotokos, founded and organized in Rome within the headquarters of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of Italy. The goal is to reveal the typology of cohabitation that exists among the bishop, the monks, and the nuns who dwell at the episcopate headquarters either in the same building or in segregated spaces, sharing, however, the same ‘topos’. The genesis and the objective of this research demand the use of an experimental methodology designated to analyzing the phenomena from antiquity to present, using the historical-critical method, based on literary, archeological and documentary sources, as well as interviews and ethnographic research.
