| Summary: | Human nature calls for people to respond to sensory experiences. Indeed, the world in which worshippers live each day is filled with visual and aural stimuli. If the worship planner acknowledges this innately human characteristic, then it should affect how worship is developed. Bearing in mind the nature of corporate worship as both universal and colloquial, the liturgist or pastor seeks ways to extend the invitation to worship to both the long-time church member, and the religious novice. The resources of art, liturgy, and hymnody engage humanity on the aesthetic, intellectual, physical, and spiritual planes. Using texts from the Gospel of Mark, this article offers two approaches to worship planning, both of which incorporate these three voices. One is thematic, in which all elements of worship point to a central focal point. The other is dialogic, in which the worship experience moves as a conversation between God and the congregation. A variety of worship resources are cited in the two services, and a list of additional resources is included. The worship orders themselves are not intended to be prescriptive, but rather to offer opportunity for pastors and liturgists to create rich dialogue in their own contexts. |
