| Summary: | This article is an overview of the healings in the Gospel of Mark as seen through African eyes. Although there are some notable differences, there is great affinity between the healings that were practiced in the Markan community and those practiced by many Africans. In the Markan story, Jesus healed by cleansing, forgiveness of sins, through the faith of someone, through magical acts, by means of exorcism, and by touching and being touched. All these healings are examined in a historical context as seen or interpreted through African eyes. Similarities in the healings are pointed out while differences are also highlighted. Although Jesus used healing practices which were quite familiar in his day and have an affinity with some of the healing practices in some African contexts, Jesus was a unique healer. |
