Description
Summary:Readers of John's gospel meet an almost full eclipse of conventional end-time imagery. Yet, some eschatological statements do appear, often alongside others more typical of John which accent present fulfillment. This study examines the juxtaposition of present and future in the Fourth Gospel in relation to the characters in the narrative. Because John emphasizes the finality of Jesus as revealer and life-giver, there is no room for future qualification of what he effects in the present. And for the "world" aligned against the revealer, the future can add no verdict beyond that already rendered in the present in response to Jesus. But while for believers death has already given way to life, the challenge remains of "abiding" in that life granted by Jesus, and so final validation will come "at the last day." John's presentation of "eschatology" therefore proves to be both literarily and theologically coherent.
