Summary: | While the Jesus Seminar has occasioned renewed interest in the quest for the historical Jesus, which had been virtually abandoned by scholars since Bultmann, disagreements over both criteria and application of the criteria to the gospel materials should provoke reexamination of not only the goals the quest might have but even more the ideological presuppositions of those engaged in the quest. Social science approaches, especially cultural anthropology, hold out the prospect of such a thorough reexamination, which is needed to overcome mythological presentations of a Christ who not only appears to contradict Jesus of Nazareth but also permits the church to stand silent before or opposed to contemporary movements that embody the kingdom Jesus preached. |
