Summary: | In July 2020, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith published the Vademecum on certain points of procedure in treating cases of sexual abuse of minors committed by clerics. It is a concise and practical handbook with instructions for bishops and church authorities on how to deal with cases of abuse. In May of this year, the new text of Book VI of the Code of Canon Law, On Penal Sanctions in the Church, was promulgated. This volume is the result of 12 years of work led by the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts and contributes to the renewing, clarifying and reinvigorating of canonical criminal law, which is necessary for the good governance of the Church community. This article briefly presents the contents and inspiring principles of these two texts. |
