Summary: | Psychological research and therapeutic practice have long intersected with values belonging to religious and spiritual traditions. An example of this fruitful dialogue is the interdisciplinary study of compassion. A recent publication, which is the result of the contribution of a team of mental health professionals, traces the multiple strands of this fundamental approach. The research shows that compassion not only protects against the wounds of life, but also reverses perspectives, and shows how these strands can become opportunities for growth and maturation. Compassion can easily be misunderstood as a superficial and mushy approach to one’s own and to others’ suffering. By studying it in depth, and above all by practising it, compassion is of great help in living life to the full in every situation. |
