Description
Summary:This article considers the CRISPR technique, which is among the recent advances in genetics, and appears to be capable of modifying human genetic information with precision (genomic editing.) Its inventors were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2020. While scientists study how to improve this technique, seeking to avoid any application that is morally problematic, ethical reflection points to the distinction between therapies and enhancement, as well as between interventions that cure adult human cells and those that aim to modify gametes and embryos. Further ethical reflection shows how CRISPR can influence integral human development and the common good, while protecting the weakest among us and the environment.
