| Summary: | After showing certain problematic aspects of the neo-contractualist vision of justice, this paper traces the historical process of elaboration of this fundamental virtue for ethical action. For the Greeks, as for the Bible, justice is to be referred first of all to God. For the fact of being created in God’s image, Thomas specifies, the human person is the bearer of rights. This is the basis of the suffix jus of jus-titia, which in turn refers to the theme of natural law, which was complex but well known to the ancients. In the absence of such presuppositions, it becomes more difficult to protect man from subtle injustices that in time prove to be devastating, as we saw during the totalitarianisms of the last century and can be seen in today’s political proposals. |
