Description
Summary:The text intends to discuss the conflicts that involved the third brothers and the Carmelite religious established in Vila do Recife, during the 18th century. For this purpose, sources from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino were selected, made available online by the Projeto Resgate Barão do Rio Branco. After the consultation of the referred sources, two specific contexts were selected for analysis: the second half of the 1740s, when the reason for the disturbances lay in the ways of accessing the Third Order’s exercise chapel; and the decades of 1770 to 1790, when the subordination of the Third Order to the Carmelite religious was more clearly called into question. The text is part of a set of recent efforts that have sought to clarify more broadly the role of the Third Orders in Portuguese domains.
