Sin embargo, un atento estudio de los documentos antidonatistas muestra muchos elementos interesantes. Según Optato y Agustín, la noción de madre debía ser aplicada a todos los creyentes, porque el cuerpo de Cristo está formado por todos aquellos que la Iglesia había engendrado como hijos a través del bautismo. Según ambos obispos africanos, también los donatistas administraban un bautismo válido, pero solo Agustín demostró cómo la salvación podía encontrarse fuera de las viscera Ecclesiae. De cualquier modo, este artículo confronta la imagen de la Ecclesia mater, tal como es presentada en el Adversus Donatistas, de Optato, publicado para responder al obispo donatista Parmeniano, y según las explicaciones correspondientes en los escritos de Agustín contra los cismáticos (Tractatus, Sermones, Epistulae). De este modo, ofrece un cuadro de la teología africana del s. IV., The modern scholars have studied the maternity of the Church independently from the anti-Donatist literature. By doing so, it presents a picture of the African theology of the fourth century. |
