Summary: | The 160th anniversary of the death of Camillo Benso, occurs this year. This Count of Cavour was “the great director” of our national Risorgimento, and an able and intelligent statesman who was able to accomplish “the first Italian miracle, namely the creation of country we know today as “Italy”. The last months of the life of the great statesman from Turin were entirely dedicated not only to the complex issues concerning the formation of the Kingdom of Italy, but also to the resolution of the religious question, or rather the relationship between the State and the Church in the new Italian order. In addition to exploring this theme, this article will deal with the position that Charles de Montalembert, a French Catholic politician and intellectual, took on this matter in the pages of our magazine. He was often quoted in his speeches by Cavour as the brilliant creator of the famous principle of a “free Church in a free State”. |
